Penmaenmawr Museum Collections

A collection of over 4000 objects

Penmaenmawr Museum looks after a collection of over 4,000 objects, documents and photographs

The collections all relate to the history of Penmaenmawr and the surrounding area.

The collection covers eight main themes:

  • Archaeology / ancient landscape
  • Arts and literature
  • Education
  • Health and medicine
  • Industry
  • Science and nature
  • Social and cultural heritage
  • Tourism

With so many items in our collection, it is not possible to display everything at once. We hold a series of temporary exhibitions annually, selecting topics and objects that together help us to tell interesting stories about the town and showcase the items in our care.

Donate an Item:

Penmaenmawr Museum’s collection is continually growing. Donations of objects, photographs and documents are mainly driven through the museum’s physical presence in the town centre and through our online activity.

We can only accept items that specifically relate to Penmaenmawr and its environs. If you would like to donate an object, document or photograph of local interest to the museum, please see the information below and then click here to contact us:

How our Collection Grows

Penmaenmawr Museum’s collections can only develop with your generosity. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have an item of interest.

If you have items you would like to donate, please contact us with the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your contact details
  • A description of the item/s
  • Any information that will help us understand the importance of the item/s
  • Information about ownership of the item/s
  • Scans or photographs (if possible)

What happens next?

  • A member of our Collections Team will get in touch with you about the item/s.
  • If the item/s will help us fill a gap in the museum’s collection, we will ask you to work with us to complete a form with details about the item/s and ownership.
  • The Collections Team carefully assesses each item offered to the museum to ensure that it does not duplicate items we already have and to evaluate condition. All potential donations are assessed once a month by the Collections Team.
  • Once acquired, items become part of our permanent collection.

 Please be aware that:

We cannot accept hazardous items such as firearms, objects that contain asbestos, etc.

  • Not all items donated to the museum can be put on display.
  • Once an item has been donated, it becomes part of our permanent collection.
  • The cost of caring for collections is high, and being a museum that relies on fundraising, sometimes we are not able to accept items that will cost a lot of money to conserve.
