Marriage to ironmaster John Guest brought Lady Charlotte Bertie to Merthyr Tydfil in the 1830s. Intelligent and energetic, she developed sufficient understanding of the iron trade to equip her to take an active role in Guest’s Dowlais Iron Company while at the same time devoting herself to the study of Welsh history and culture. Having brought out her Mabinogion, on John’s death she succeeded him as head of the works, where she introduced a programme of renovation, embarked on some far-reaching reforms, and weathered a strike among her workforce. This talk explores her dual career as translator and industrialist.
The talk will be given by Victoria Owens and is on at 7.30pm, November 20th, 2019 at Eglwys y Berth (the school room at the back of the former Jerusalem Chapel opposite the Llys Clwyd bus stop in Penmaenmawr). Everyone is welcome, members get in for free and non-members for £3.
